History

~The Brush of the broom represents Family~

"Jumping the Broom" is a ceremony in which the bride and groom, either at the ceremony or at the reception, signify their entrance into a new life together, and their creation of a new family by symbolically "sweeping away" their former single lives or the past,  former problems and concerns, and "jumping" over the broom to enter upon a new adventure as husband & wife.

~The Handle represents the Almighty~

The ceremony,  which derived from Africa and dates back to the 1600's, was created by our ancestors during slavery in the American South.  The ceremony of broom jumping has both symbolic and spiritual importance in the African American culture. The tradition itself was created by our ancestors because they could not legally marry.  They created their own tradition to honor their unions by "Jumping the Broom."  The couple would jump over a decorated handcrafted broom, which symbolized the start of a new life together and the sweeping away of the past .

~The Ribbon represents The Tie that binds the couple together~

Now you can carry on this grand tradition of "Jumping the Broom" with the same joy as thousands who have jumped before you.  You can incorporate  "Jumping the Broom" into a  traditional or non-traditional ceremony.  Today, couples from every background are joining in on this symbolic tradition.
